New Direction – Café Closed

Originally started as a ministry to local students in Zilina, the café, a vision of our founder Danny Jones, quickly became a popular place for both Christians and non Christians alike. It was the perfect environment to meet new people, start new relationships and point them toward Christ. The plan was that the café could be a help to local church youth ministries of Zilina in reaching students for Christ in a natural way.

In it’s lifetime, the café had special weekly programming, english classes, concerts, parties, retreats, camps, teas, coffees, icecream, toasts and much more. And for several years, it seemed that Kompas Cafe was accomplishing it’s vision. And in many ways it certainly was. No one can deny the lives that were reached, touched and changed for Christ through the ministry of the Café.

However, as time passed it became clear that the café had become a youth group in itself and had inadvertently become competition for the local church youth groups. This was directly against it’s original purpose and goal to assist and build the local churches.

As a result, it was decided in 2005 that the student programming of the café would not continue. And in the best interest of the local churches, the focus of the café would change to a different target. The café would no longer have a ministry purpose, but would attempt to become strictly a normal public cafe to help financially support the youth leader training department of Kompas Training Center.

But, after two years of trying various approaches toward various new clientele, it was determined that it would be a better financial decision to close the café and rent the space to another potential business. And in this way it could generate funding for the main department of Kompas, which has always been the training of youth leaders nationally.

What we didn’t realize, was the possibilities this move would open for TCK. Generating funds from foreign donors has always been a constant strain for Kompas ministries as a whole. But now it seems that there is a new day dawning, whereby ministry funding can be generated from within our own walls by renting parts of the Kompas building. What a hidden blessing to have this space free now for this purpose! We are praising God for the financial health that this will bring as we become financially autonomous through this new paradigm.
